Midwife Led Unit (MLU) , Maldon |
St Peter's provides complete midwifery-led care throughout antenatal, labour and postnatal stages of pregnancy for women who fall within the low-risk criteria.
The St Peter's midwives also provide antenatal and postnatal care for women who have been assessed as having a high-risk pregnancy, and ensure they have an appropriate consultant-led plan of care. High-risk women will deliver in the consultant-led unit at St John?s Hospital.
An early pregnancy clinic is available Saturdays and Sundays (13.00 until 15.00) where a midwife is available to commence the antenatal care and give early pregnancy advice. This is a drop in clinic but is also available by telephoning 01621 725305/725306 when pregnancy is confirmed. Women who have had their pregnancy confirmed by their GP will receive an appointment through the post inviting them to attend a clinic for a booking appointment.
The midwives provide booking appointments for newly-pregnant women, ultrasound scans, and midwife-led antenatal clinics. Consultant clinics are held weekly and referrals can be made to physiotherapy and dietician services where necessary. In the surrounding district midwife clinics are held in GP surgery?s, but women can also share their care with the GP if they so wish.
The unit has a Day Assessment facility, which at present works as a drop in and also by appointment, 7 days a week and where necessary can provide antenatal CTG monitoring. Parentcraft classes are available to first time mums and their partners, which include labour, feeding and infant care advice. Tours of the Unit are available anytime, and partners are welcome. Telephone 01621 725305 to arrange a tour.
Midwives are available twenty-four hours a day to provide care for labouring women. There is a birthing pool, which aids pain relief and makes labour more comfortable, it is easier to move and makes birth gentler for the baby. The St Peter's midwives also provide a home-delivery service for women in the Maldon area. There is also a community midwife service 7 days a week.
Breastfeeding advice and assistance is available to expectant and new mothers, as well as advice on caring for your new baby i.e. bathing, feeding, sterilisation. We have 24hr postnatal care, which provides help with the above in a home from home environment, which continues after discharge home, where a midwife will visit when needed. Newborn hearing screening is available on Thursdays, and there is also a newborn photography service (for which there is a charge).
The Unit has recently undergone considerable refurbishment and offers a home-from-home environment. There are dining facilities, and relaxation in the sitting room. Our postnatal rooms have also been refurbished and provide a comfortable environment for women to rest after giving birth. Postnatal stays can vary depending on the type of delivery. Some high risk women who deliver at St Johns in Chelmsford can transfer to St Peter's the same or the next day for further midwifery care.

Medium Consultant Led Unit (Medium CLU) , Harlow |
The Princess Alexandra Hospital has approximately 2,700 births per year. The Trust operates a system of ?low? and ?high? risk care. Other 'Specialist' Midwifery posts include the Breast Feeding Advisor, Diabetic Link Midwife, Labour Ward based Supervisor, Clinical Risk Manager/Audit/Research Midwife, and Ante-natal Screening Counsellors.
In-patient care is provided by a team of core midwives, this includes a clinical specialist based on the Labour Ward, who advises and supports midwifery and medical staff as required. Supervision of Midwives is proactive with annual reviews and a named Supervisor for all midwives. A Supervisor of Midwives is also based on the Labour Ward to co-ordinate development needs and offer support. Hospital based midwives rotate throughout the service gaining experience in ante-natal, post-natal and Labour Ward areas. The high-risk clinic is staffed by two midwives trained in ante-natal screening and genetic counselling. There is a Labour Ward Theatre within the Delivery Suite and the development of a day assessment unit is underway. |
